Mount Zion Baptist Church History

Official church minutes show that on April 27, 1889, Sardis Baptist Church in Hudson (now First Baptist Church) dismissed nine members to begin a new church. This group of people met on May 4, 1889 and organized Mount Zion Baptist Church. A revival was held in August and resulted in the addition of 28 members.

Sunday School began in May 1890 during the spring and summer months only. By 1910 Sunday School was being held year round. Discipleship Training, formerly known as B.Y.P.U., was started in the early 1930’s.

A young ladies mission organization was begun in October 1908. Mission organizations now are provided for all ages. The missions organizations promote mission offerings, encourage prayer for missions, provide mission study opportunities, and involve people in mission projects.

Mount Zion has been instrumental in the establishment of two other churches. In February 1912, 12 members were dismissed to help organize the Harris Chapel Baptist Church. In April 1957, Mount Zion started a mission Sunday School in a house on what has come to be known as Mission Road. On June 29, 1958 the mission moved into a new brick building and became the Sunrise Baptist Church in 1967.

Mount Zion also reaches out to the Sawmills community with a day care which began in 1965, and a bus ministry which began in 1971. Our tape ministry reaches out to our homebound members. Beyond that, we have always been strong supporters of missions and a good number of our members have participated in mission trips both in and out of the country.

Across the years Mount Zion has faithfully responded to the challenge to provide adequate building for our ministries and services. In 1988 we dedicated a new Administration and Education building.

Mount Zion celebrated her Centennial in 1989 with a year long celebration. As we have moved into the twenty-first century, we are very much aware of the many challenges that face us as we continue to offer relevant ministry and worship to a growing community. We are encouraged by our past and challenged by our future as we continually seek to fulfill our purpose of “Knowing God’s Love… And Sharing It!”
